Faith. This is a small word with a powerful punch. Though we don’t always realize it, we exhibit faith all the time. Very few of us check to see if a chair is sturdy and solid before we sit down in it. Though we have never seen that chair hold someone up, we just assume it will not collapse when we sit down. Very few of us stop our car just before the top of a hill, get out of the vehicle, walk up to the crest of the hill, and look to see if the road continues on the other side of the hill. We just assume the road is there, even though we cannot see the road, and go flying over the top of the hill. In each of these instances, we exhibit faith.
True, life-changing faith, is when we trust God even when it doesn’t make sense to us that He is right. From our perspective, we are wondering if God is getting this one wrong. We would not do anything God’s way in this case. However, even though we might be second-guessing God, we trust Him anyway and do what He says to do.
Is that how you approach celibacy? You see, Hebrews 11 teaches us that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Impossible. When you make the choice to be celibate, you are saying to God – “Father, I trust You.” You trust God to meet all of your emotional, spiritual, and physical needs.
The #1 Reason Faith Matters
When celibacy doesn’t seem to make sense, faith matters because it is our strength. When we feed it through God’s word, we strengthen our resolve to remain pure. It toughens our emotions, guides our decisions, and strengthens our bodies in our weakest moments.
When we trust God, it brings a smile to His face and joy to His heart. Through trust, we demonstrate that though we don’t understand everything. As a result, we trust that He knows what He is talking about. When we choose faith, we choose to disregard doubt.
- Doubt says: everyone is giving in and having sex.
- Faith says: God tells me not to, so I will trust Him.
- Doubt says: I am missing out.
- Faith says: God tells me it is worth the wait to hold out until my wedding night.
- Doubt says: It’s not that big a deal. What could go wrong?
- Faith says: God protects those who walk with Him and do things His way.
The Umbrella of Faith Leads to Trust
When I disobey, I come out from under the umbrella of His protection. Instead, I will trust Him.Though I don’t understand it, Lord, and I don’t really like it God, I will trust that You know what You are doing when it comes to sex outside of marriage.
I will choose to trust that Your viewpoint is better than mine since You see today and all my tomorrows. I will trust that You have a better plan for me than I can devise on my own. I will trust that You will honor Your word, and it will be worth it to wait. Though I don’t get it all, God, I will trust You.
Living by faith in a sexually charged world is not easy, but nothing in life worth having is ever easy. By choosing to remain celibate until marriage, you are choosing to walk in faith. The good news is that God is walking right beside you. Be encouraged today.
